Frequently Asked Questions

How long have Lucas Terriers been in the United States?
Over 50 years.

How did they first get here?
There were imported by Americans who were exposed to them while traveling in Great Britain.

How many Lucas Terriers are in the US and Canada today?
83 dogs were documented living in North America in the 2011 biannual survey conducted by the US club.

Are there any breeders in the United States?
Yes, but very few.

Who Buys Lucas Terrier?

Individuals and families who appreciate a great little go-anywhere, do-anything, sweet, smart companion dog. Our Club's breeding program emphasis is on health and temperament.

Why Do Lucas Terriers Cost Less In the UK than the US?

Lucas Terriers are more expensive in the US than in the UK for two reasons. First, they have significantly more dogs in the UK than we do and have fewer geographic hurdles to overcome. Second we often have to breed through AI and in the UK they have the luxury of breeding the old fashioned way - dog to dog which is significantly less expensive.

Are puppies difficult to find?
They can be. Demand for Lucas Terrier puppies usually exceeds supply by 20 to 1. If you are interested in a puppy and would like to be put in contact with a breeder, please email tLaurie Crouch at: LucasTerrierLover@gmail.com. Be sure you include your contact information and any other information you would like a breeder to know about you. A breeder will then contact you.

Where can I see a Lucas Terrier?
There are Lucas Terriers in: California, Canada, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Hawaii, Kentucky, Texas, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, and Washington State. If you live near one of these states and would like to arrange a visit, please email the club Secretary, Deb Thrift, at: deb_thrift@verizon.net. She will contact club members and see if a meeting can be arranged at a time convenient for all parties.

With so few dogs in the US how will I ever be able to breed my female?
Volunteers from the club can help you find a suitable mate.

Is a Sporting Lucas Terrier the same as a Lucas Terrier?
No. They are two distinct breeds. Unfortunately, the similarity in names is confusing. But both are lovely dogs.

Is a Lucas Terrier bred to a Norfolk Terrier or Sealyham still considered to be a Lucas Terrier

Yes.

Does the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognize the Lucas Terrier?
Not at this time. Lore has it that Sir Jocelyn Lucas wanted the Lucas Terrier to remain an unexaggerated sporting breed, therefore he never sought formal Kennel Club recognition.
